learning differences

Many of my clients come to me through referrals from neuropsychologists or school learning specialists. Often children have just received a diagnosis of a learning disability and parents are eager to find support for their child with ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, or any written language disorder. The good news is that with the correct intervention students can thrive in rigorous academic settings and excel in school, even with a diagnosed learning disability.

therapeutic

Emotional issues affect learning. I address the whole student and pay close attention to any issues that impede the learning process. Many students experience increased anxiety or depression and need support in a number of ways. I help students address these issues and implement strategies for school / test anxiety, social relationships or social skills, learning to advocate on their own behalf with teachers, while promoting self-reflection and self-monitoring practices.

genre specific instruction

Students are required to write across the curriculum. They need to understand the underlying structures of both narrative and expository writing, poetry and prose, and have to ability to synthesize and analyze content in reports and analytical essays.

demystify learning issues

When students understand how their brains work, and what inhibits their learning, they move from shame around their struggle to ownership of their process. They learn that the stumbling blocks they encounter are in no way "their fault" and that everyone has something that causes them difficulty. Knowledge equips them with the strategies and mindset to help them be successful. Instead of internalizing their struggle as a weakness, they become skilled at putting adaptive strategies in place to aid them in the daily school related tasks.

enrichment

I also work with students who wish for greater exposure to writing. They either love to write and feel they need an outlet beyond what school provides, or find themselves in need of some additional support in keeping up with especially rigorous academic standards. Students in honors and AP English classes benefit from one -on one instruction to do the intense abstract work of analyzing literature or writing long papers or reports.

time management and organization

Many students struggle with time and material management. I help students organize binders, create spaces conducive to study, plan out long and short term assignments and projects, break projects down to doable parts. We experiment with methods for overall organization at school and at home, trying to find the rhythm that works most effectively for each individual. These important executive function skills aid in school work but also create effective stategies for future success.

INDIVIDUAL LEARNING PLAN

Each brain is unique. Coupled with belief systems and personality, students present with varying needs and areas of strength. I create a specialized learning plan that incorporates preferences with strategies to further a student's written language proficiency.

college essays and admissions

Applying for college is often a big task these days. I help students in all steps of the process - identifying schools to apply for, working on the application process - planning time lines and crafting strong admission essays. The college essay is an important part of many applications and requires both a narrative and analytical understanding of writing. Helping students mine their experiences, hone their belief systems, and get it all on paper in under 500 words is a delightful undertaking.

STEP-WISE APPROACH

Writing fluently and coherently requires significant brain power. A step-wise approach that incorporates prewriting, drafting, and editing, frees the brain to focus on one task at a time. It reduces stress by limiting the number of functions engaged in at one time.

advocate

I collaborate with parents, teachers, school learning specialists, neuropsychologists, therapists, and other professionals involved with the student. A collaborative approach ensures that the student receives the best care...

EVALUATION

My first task is to evaluate a student's current proficiency in written expression. The final product is only one part of the assessment - I also observe how the student approaches the task and any accompanying agiation or distraction as they proceed.
